COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR MINOR CRIMES: Sen. Koko Pimentel, chairman of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights, tackles a proposed measure authorizing the courts to impose community service instead of jail time for offenders serving sentences between one to 30 days of imprisonment. “Flexibility in our sentencing procedure will decongest our local jails and prevent the criminalization of offenders serving time for minor crimes,” Pimentel said during a hearing attended by officials of the Department of Justice Tuesday morning.
