HEARING ON GARLIC PRODUCTION: Sen. Cynthia Villar, chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Food, asked Dir. Vivencio Mamaril, OIC, Bureau of Plant Industry, to explain why the price of garlic in the local market is rising to P200 per kilo when the landed cost of imported garlic is P17 per kilo only. Villar said the same scenario happened in 2014 when traders created an artificial shortage of garlic supply to jack up prices to more than P300 per kilo. During the committee hearing, Villar also asked the BPI official to help garlic farmers produce more than the current production of 6 percent of the country's demand.
