A milestone for fight vs gender-based harassment: The bicameral panel on Wednesday signed the reconciled version of the Safe Spaces Act which will impose heftier penalties for any unwanted and uninvited sexual actions or remarks against any persons in public spaces. The signing of the bill was led by Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros and Senator Sherwin Gatchalian with their House of Representatives counterparts Rep. Tom Villarin, Rep. Rav Rocamora, Rep. Michelle Antonio and Rep. Bernadette Herrara-Dy, and the advocates. The measure will plug gaps in the existing Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995 so that persons at work, school or elsewhere can be confident that they will enjoy protection from all sorts of abusers and harassers --no matter who they are. The bicam version is up for ratification in both houses of Congress.
