KIKO ON THE SENATE SLATE FORMATION

"The experience in the Senate these past two years wherein Senators from different political camps successfully came together despite differences to unite was precisely because we set aside political partisanship to stand on common causes such as Cha-cha, EO 464, PP 1017, among others. UNO should not insist that we go under their wing and join them, with a take-it-or-leave-it-stance. To do so, I believe, is not the way to unity. Negotiation rather than dictation is the better course of action. We need not join them to be able to work with them in order to squarely address vital issues facing the nation."

"As incumbent senators our track record speaks for itself. We have shown that we are fiercely independent and unafraid to speak our minds on controversial issues. We have shown that we cannot be dictated upon by Malacañang or other interest groups. Why then should we allow ourselves to be dictated upon now? We welcomed the opportunity to unite with other groups or individuals but if we are to unite, it must be on the basis of mutual respect and, more importantly, a common vision. To my mind, that common vision should be to ensure that the Senate remains and independent and vigilant institution committed to the rule of law and respect for the Constitution regardless of one's political affiliation. The nation and our people first and foremost before the administration or the opposition."
