SENATE RACE ABOUT GOOD GOVERNANCEANGARA

"The present senatorial race is not about the rivalry between President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and former president Joseph Estrada. The senatorial race is about leadership and good governance. These are the real issues voters must consider in their choice of senators."

This was the statement of senatorial candidate Edgardo "Ed" Angara in the wake of perceptions that the upcoming elections are about political rivalries. According to Angara, elections are about choosing public servants with good track records, and not because they belong to a particular political party.

"Maybe for some candidates, but not for all," Angara maintains. "It's about time that people understand that there are candidates who seek government office with the fundamental motivation that they can help the socio-economic machinery move forward."

According to Angara, senatorial candidates must have a clear platform of policies and reforms in order to appropriately and effectively serve as a senator of the republic.

"The country today is beset by issues that should be immediately addressed," he said. "These are: reforms to improve the state of education; new laws that will strengthen food security; well-studied bills that will curb the spate of corrupt practices in government and the threat of terrorism; and strong directives that would help improve the working conditions of the labor force, among other things."

The senator said it is of utmost importance that candidates include clear solutions to these issues in their political agenda rather than engage in political bickering and backbiting.

"We cannot muddle the real issues without hurting this country," Angara strongly stressed. "Political power struggles must give way to clearcut solutions to our bigger problems."
