KIKO TO PGMA: CALL FOR A SPECIAL SESSION
TO TACKLE CRUCIAL LANDMARK BILLS

Senate Majority Leader Kiko Pangilinan today called on President Arroyo to order Congress to hold a special session that will tackle urgent bills pending before it.

"The Senate has passed urgent pieces of legislation such as the Human Rights Compensation Bill, the historical UP Charter Bill, and the amendments to the Intellectual Property Code which would make medicines more accessible to the poor and the middle class. These measures are long overdue, and the benefits of these bills are crucial. The House can still pass these measures before the end of June, and considering that it has already closed its Congress, the President needs to call for a special session. Article 15, Section 6 of our Constitution gives the president the power to call for special sessions at any time. The House leadership likewise needs to display that they still maintain the support of their peers, by summoning enough presence to reach a quorum in that special session," Kiko said.

"It will be a shame to delay these important measures when our representatives and Malacañang can actually do something about it. We need to carry out our duties with a sense of urgency because our people cannot wait any longer. There is no excuse for us public servants," Kiko ended.
