ROXAS: NEW LP CASE DESIGNED TO DISTRACT PARTY FROM
PRO-PEOPLE AGENDA

Senator Mar Roxas questioned the timing of a new case being brought to the Commission on Elections disputing his proclamation as Liberal Party President last November, saying there is a "pattern" to these interventions.

He stressed that the Liberal Party had always fought, and will always be fighting, for its independence from outside forces, and will not backtrack just because of this new case filed by Environment Secretary Jose L. Atienza, Jr. and others.

"May kume-kuwerdas talaga rito na guluhin ang LP, nang sa ganoon, ang ating atensyon ay mawala dito sa mga sinusulong ng Partido para sa kapakanan ng sambayanan," Roxas said.

"Heto na naman kami, nakikita na natin ang pattern dito. Noong si Senador Drilon ay nagsalita laban sa administrasyon sa 2005, ginulo ang LP. Ngayon na may stand tayo laban sa VAT sa langis, ginugulo rin ang LP," Roxas said.

"Tumutol kami sa EO 464, sa Proclamation 1017, sa cha-cha, sa Anti-Terrorism Law, at isa ako sa mga nagmumungkahi na tanggalin ang VAT sa produktong petrolyo. Sa mga halimbawang ito, na salungat ang ating posisyon sa administrasyon, ay nagbibigay-dahilan kung bakit ginugulo ngayon ang LP," he added.

Roxas reiterated that the Supreme Court had long resolved with finality that the election held by incumbent Environment Sec. Lito Atienza had been against the party's constitution and was invalid.

"Naaawa naman ako sa aking kaibigan na si Sec. Lito Atienza, dahil malinaw naman ang desisyon ng Supreme Court," he said.

Despite the conflict with what had been the party's "Atienza wing," Roxas expressed openness to welcoming his former party members back to the fold.

"Noon, ngayon at sa darating na mga panahon, bilang pangulo ng Partido Liberal, lagi akong bukas kay Lito Atienza, Mike Defensor, at sa lahat pa na sumama muli sila dito sa lehitimong Liberal Party," he said.

"Sisikapin kong lahat para mawala ang pagka-deemed resigned nila bilang isang kongkretong hakbang na magkaroon ng conciliation. Pero huwag naman nilang abusuhin at guluhin ang aming Partido," he added.
