Senator Aquino's statement on the arrest of Anwar Ibrahim

A stable and vibrant democracy engages not just one, but all sectors of society. It allows the free exchange of ideas, creating an atmosphere where peaceful resolutions leading to long-term stability can exist.

Views, especially from the opposition, are protected to foster this environment.

Through stability in a neighboring country such as Malaysia, an enhanced relationship with our country can be achieved.

It is therefore with alarm that we view the recent arrest of Mr. Anwar Ibrahim.

This unexpected act by Malaysian authorities, an hour before his scheduled appearance at police headquarters to answer the allegations, raises even more questions on the validity of the charges against him.

I fervently hope that Mr. Ibrahim will be afforded all opportunities by the Malaysian government to clear his name through just and lawful means.
