Gordon calls for a renewal of values in 2009

Independent Senator Richard J. Gordon today called on the Filipino people to take part in a national movement that would endow the country with a renewed vision, instill better values, and inspire volunteerism.

Gordon made the call in his New Year's message as he underscored that it is no coincidence that Rizal Day and New Year's Eve come one after the other, and that there is in these succession of days a clear message.

"The message is clear -- if we as a nation and as a people do not reflect upon the lessons of its past and retrieve a sense of pride, then we will condemn ourselves to repeating our mistakes and fail to look upon the future with hope," he said.

Gordon pointed out that the time is coming when the Philippine can choose to depart from its current state where corruption is committed with impunity and perpetrators go unpunished.

"The New Year brings us closer to a time when we will be called upon to direct our nation's course through the 2010 elections. Let us use the coming year to prepare and chart a course that will lead to the renewal of our country's values. Let us chart a course for Bagumbayan," he said.

The Independent Senator explained that Bagumbayan is a New Philippines.

"It is a community of people who think, speak, and act for the common good. It is a country that works, a country where everyone has asenso and kaginhawaan, where people look upon their past with pride and look to the future with hope," said Gordon.

"Our quest is not for the victory of one man or woman in the 2010 polls. Our quest is for the victory of all Filipinos for Bagumbayan is where we Filipinos will find our future, not in foreign shores, but in our very own native Filipinas," he added.

In order to make Bagumbayan a reality, Gordon said it would necessary to make use of a formula whereby all would be guided by a common vision and values that would be in turn be manifested through volunteerism to achieve victory.

"We must have a vision for where we want our nation to be and mold ourselves to the values that will help us achieve this vision," said Gordon.
