Pia leads run for women empowerment, March 29

A thousand women are expected to troop to the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City this Sunday, March 29, as 'Pinay In Action' stages its fourth All Women's Run to mark International Women's Month.

The only one of its kind in the country, the all women's run will be led by Senator Pia S. Cayetano, a sports and fitness enthusiast who is known to use running, cycling and triathlon events to promote various advocacies.

"This is an opportunity to make a unique statement for women empowerment and at the same time keep fit, test one's physical abilities, or simply have good, clean fun with friends and family," said the 43-year-old senator, who is also a lawyer, entrepreneur and mother of two.

This year's staging will feature three categories: the 5-km and 10-km individual run events and the 1.6-km "fun run" where one-adult-one-kid tandems can participate. Prices will be at stake for top finishers in each event.

"Everyone can join, from competitive runners to beginners. In fact, even men may join, on the condition that they'll register with a female participant and that they won't be eligible to win any of the prices. While this is an all-women's run, we really encourage men to support women's causes because gender equality and sensitivity is everyone's concern."

On-site registration on event day will start at 5:00 AM at the Esplanade Area while the races start at 6:00 AM. Pre-registration options and other details are available on www.pinayinaction.com.

Cayetano, one of the principal authors of the Magna Carta of Women Bill and President of the Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), added that a Women's Expo showcasing women's concerns will be put up at the registration area and opened to the public.

The Expo will feature, among others, information booths on breast and cervical cancer, including free breast examination; anti-violence against women and children; and a photo exhibit on women's rights under RA 9262 or the Anti Violence against Women and their Children Act of 2004 and the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
