PROPONENTS OF CHA-CHA ARE PLAYING WITH FIRE-KIKO PANGILINAN

Independent Senator Kiko Pangilinan warns those behind the push for Charter change are making "a big mistake if they think they can ram it down the throats of a people already sick and tired of abuses and corruption in government."

Pangilinan made the statement after reports surfaced that the proposed con-ass in the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution and bypass the Senate is still very much alive and is only 20 votes shy of the required number.

"Takot na takot silang bumaba matapos ang 2010 dahil wala na silang immunity, at kapag nasampahan na ng reklamo ay baka mauwi sa non-bailable offense na plunder at derecho sa kulungan," Pangilinan said. "Ito ang dahilan kung bakit hindi mamatay-matay ang lintik na cha-cha na ito and is being revived by no less than the closest relatives of the President."

Speculations abound that the House is seeking to get the numbers in creating a Constituent assembly to provoke the Senate into seeking a ruling from the Supreme Court. President Arroyo is expected to fill vacancies in the judiciary and there are fears that an administration-dominated tribunal could rule in favor of the Con-ass.

"They are probably experiencing sleepless nights as 2010 draws near. People want genuine change and are looking to 2010 to finally and with a great sense of relief say goodbye to the Arroyo government. Those pushing for cha-cha should get real and recognize the painful reality that the cha-cha route may in fact bring them from the frying pan into the fire. They should quit this cha-cha posturing while they're ahead."
