Press Statement of Senator Loren Legarda

On SC granting Gadian's amparo plea

The grant by the Supreme Court of the amparo petition of the sister of Navy Lt. Nancy Gadian showed the responsiveness of the highest court of the land in deciding urgent matters, especially one that concerns the safety of a reported whistle-blower.

I have no doubt that the leadership of our Armed Forces also wishes for the allegation made by Lt. Gadian on the purported misuse of Balikatan fund to be fully ventilated, looked into and for charges to be filed, if so warranted by evidence.

This development should help us get into the bottom of the serious allegation because corruption in whatever branch of government is simply unacceptable.

On swine flu precautions

The Department of Health must seek the help of media - radio, television and newspapers - to disseminate precautionary guidelines and on what should be done when swine flu infection is suspected. This is one instance when the people wouldn't mind being bombarded with information by DOH. There's no such thing as information overload when it comes to swine flu. But the important thing is that our people are getting the right information.

All Filipinos must also work to improve their immune system by exercising, having a balanced diet and getting plenty of rest. Being healthy certainly helps in view of reports that most of the 80 deaths worldwide associated with swine flu arose from complications with other ailments.

As the symptoms of swine flu are very similar to common flu cases, any of our countrymen who would feel feverish must immediately seek medical attention. The important thing is for us not to disregard symptoms as just a case of the common cold. It's better to err on the side of caution on this matter.

On RP films doing well in Cannes

The raves and accolade being drawn by several Filipino films at the Cannes Film Festival, like the movie Independencia, are like a breath of fresh air and a source of pride for us Filipinos amidst serious concerns like the tottering economy and the swine flu scare.

The triumphs being posted by homegrown films and talents should prompt our countrymen to support the local film industry and our movie producers, directors and actors to produce high-quality films, especially those that are socially and environmentally relevant.

What's happening in France is yet another proof that we can compete with the rest, if not the best, in the world, whether it be in boxing as exemplified by Manny Pacquiao and our host of other champions, or in film-making.
