Creating bridges, building binding relationship
ANGARA INITIATES AND BRINGS DIA DE GALLEON TO RP

Historic sympathizer Senator Edgardo J. Angara marks another tribune to history and culture highlighting important aspects of the Galleon and expeditions the event "Dia de Galleon" can bring together Asia, Europe and Latin America.

"Culture, religion and centuries-long history make it natural for affinity to exist, irrespective of changing political circumstances or separate development paths," said Angara who initiated steering committee to forward "Dia de Galleon".

With the galleon trade, global commerce flourished. Manila became a strategic world port, the city and its businessmen prospered. The extensive commerce naturally gave way also to cultural exchange, and became a vehicle as well for religious missions. Highly sought goods from the Philippines and other Asian countries found their way to other parts of the world, and commodities from Mexico and Europe were brought to the Philippines as well. Because of the scope and historical significance of this historical episode in the country, "Dia de Galleon" celebration was conceptualized.

Since the "tornaviaje" or the return route of the galleons from the Philippines to Mexico happened sometime November or October it was suggested that the official "Dia de Galleon" day will be on the first week of October.

Angara highlighted that this event can showcase a lot of important aspects of the Galleon trade and expeditions but most importantly this event can bring together three continents: Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

As part of the "Dia de Galleon", an exhibition of treasures from the galleon wreckages was also suggested. Seminars on trade and other related topics will also be conducted.

"With key initiatives in the area of history, culture, education, language, sports, and labor and migration we hope to see continued dynamism, cooperation and genuine action from countries towards deeper relations," ended Angara.
