ANGARA EYES ADDITIONAL BENEFITS FOR THE ELDERLY

Senator Edgardo J. Angara today emphasized the need to ensure that the increase of aged people will not result in a decrease in quality of life.

"It is in recognition of the well-entrenched Filipino practice of taking care of the senior members of society," said Angara who authored the Senior Citizen Act of 2003.

According to the National Statistics Office, the total number of Senior Citizens (60 years old and above) is 4,565,560 as of 2009. This number comprises 5.97 % of the total Philippine population.

He emphasized, "it is the duty of the State to prioritize the needs of the elderly, to motivate and encourage them to contribute to nation building."

He added, "there is a need to recognize the rights of senior citizens to take their place in society and this should be the concern of each Filipino family, the Filipino community and the Philippine Government.

Apart from the RA 9257 which recognizes the fact that the welfare of the elderly is a matter that must be undertaken hand in hand by all members of society, both from the private and public sector Angara eyes for an institutionalization of a research institute that will conduct studies about the ageing process and for its application to improve the social and individual consequences of ageing

"We will maximize the use of technology to analyze the problems of ageing from multiple perspectives and conduct research to identify and pre-empt degenerative health conditions prevalent to the elderly society," said Angara.
