LOREN LAUNCHES HUMANITARIAN MISSION IN LUNETA

After the devastation of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, Senator Loren Legarda today launches a humanitarian mission that includes her most important advocacies: jobs, environment and health. Legarda will be hosting a job fair, giving away seedlings, and providing free breast screening and mammograms at the Luneta Park in Manila.

"What started with Ondoy and Pepeng as an environmental crisis easily translated into a humanitarian crisis. Thousands of people were driven into evacuation, deprived of their basic human rights to clean water, food, good health, a proper home, and a decent job. This is my way of alleviating their suffering," she said.

There will also be a film showing on climate change and disaster risk reduction, free eye checkups, Libreng Tawag for families of OFW workers, and Libreng Gupit for participants. "I will devote my public life to humanitarian work, especially helping those suffering the ill-effects of climate change and joblessness. I will unequivocally commit myself to advancing a prosperous, just and sustainable Philippine society. I chose Luneta because this is the place of the Filipino Everyman. More than a place of leisure, it is a place of self-sacrifice, dignity and pride in our nation," she said.

Legarda has earned massive support from provincial and local governments in her climate change advocacy and have adopted her platform of sustainable development, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

"I want to do this in every major plaza in the country. Luneta is just the start. This is where I planted the first 1000 trees, which now has grown to 2 million trees all over the Philippines. This is where we will plant the seeds of hope," she said.
