Press statement of Senator Legarda on Eid'l Adha

Let me extend my warm greetings to the Muslim Filipino community on this year's celebration of Eid'l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

In declaring November 27-28, 2009 as a holiday in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the national government gives due importance to the proper observance by the Muslim Filipinos community of Eid'l Adha, which marks the culmination of Harirya Hajj or the pilgrimage to Mecca.

As the second Muslim holiday declared by the national government, the first being Eid'l Fitr or the Festival of Breaking the Feast, Eid'l Adha affords our Muslim brothers and sisters yet another opportunity to renew and strengthen their faith.

While the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, we have 10 million Muslim Filipinos who are free to practice their religion and even enjoy self-rule in parts of Mindanao. The government encourages the active participation of Muslims in the political, economic and social spheres, and many Muslim Filipinos have excelled in various fields of endeavor.

I fully support government efforts to further strengthen Christian-Muslim unity. Interfaith dialogue is crucial to attaining lasting peace and harmony in Philippine society in the years ahead.
