ANGARA FILED BILL TO STRENGTHEN OFFICE
OF THE SOLICITOR GENERAL

Senator Edgardo J. Angara yesterday filed bill to further strengthen the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) as an institution and grant the office fiscal autonomy to further ensure its independence.

"Defending the interest of the country and to advocate the rule of law as a fulcrum in advancing the interest of the government and the rights of the people is indeed vital and we ought to strengthen the body that is bound in ensuring that these duties are put into practice," said Angara, former IBP President.

The OSG represents agencies, instrumentalities and its officials and the country upon the instructions of the President in proceedings, investigations, litigations, negotiations and conferences as well as represent and defend the legal position of the country.

Under Senate Bill 3563 the OSG shall have a cabinet rank, a term of 7 years without reappointment and shall enjoy fiscal autonomy to ensure its independence in carrying out its role as the principal law firm of the government and the tribune of the people.

"SB 3563 will ensure OSG's independence and perform its twin duty as the principal law officer of the country," said Angara.
