ANGARA PUSHES FOR URGENT LEGISLATION
AS CONGRESS REOPENS TODAY

As the regular session of the 14th Congress opens today, amid the impending election fever, Senator Edgardo J. Angara continues to push for bills that address nations' issues, people's problems and concerns.

"We only have three weeks before Congress adjourns sine die. It is important that we use this time wisely and efficiently to pass urgent reform measures. 2010 is a transition year for the Philippines, therefore, we cannot afford to be business-as-usual in the Senate," said Angara.

He is working for the passage of the bill creating that Department of ICT, a bill strengthening the supervisory powers of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the creation of a freeport in Aurora Ecozone, as well as investment and incentive bills including the advancement of a holistic development plan for Mindanao thru MEDA or the Mindanao Economic Dev't Authority that will advance economic and development growth in Mindanao by integrating, promoting, coordinating, and facilitating the active participation of all the stakeholders.

"We expect Congress to pass more laws that will make the country resilient to the effects of global recession. From environmental issues to sustain growth and manage environmental impacts up to more financial reforms that will gear the country to progress and develop," said Angara chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance.

The Senator who spearheaded the crafting of the 2010 budget also led the passage of the Renewable Energy and Salary Standardization Law III.

"To know what concerns the public is just one thing, what to do and to act to address the issues is another. It is a solemn duty for any public servant to work hard and effective for the betterment of the people. I am positive and encouraging others to be optimistic as your Congress continue with its regular session," said Angara.
