ENRILE: LAWS NEEDED TO PROTECT CONSUMERS, POOR

CLAVERIA, QUEZON - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile vowed to push for more legislation that will reduce the high cost of electricity, fuel and communication in the country, stressing that the Philippines needs to be competitive in the world market.

"Hindi tayo puwedeng lumaban sa ekonomiya ng ibang bansa kung mataas ang presyo ng ating produksyon. Dapat magkaroon ng kaligayahan ang sambayanang Pilipino. Gusto ni Enrile 'Happy Kayo,'" Enrile said over DZAT.

He said there is a pressing need to pass laws that will protect consumers from scrupulous greedy businessmen who dictate and control the prices of fuel, electricity and communication.

Enrile, a senatorial candidate of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), said he will ask his colleagues in the Senate to draft measures that will benefit ordinary Filipinos. "The rich do not need a government. Iniiwasan nga nila ang gobyerno. Ang nangagailangan ng gobyerno ay ang mga maliliit."

On the rising oil prices, Enrile said he has been pushing for the passage of Senate Bill No. 3197, otherwise known as "The Competition Act of 2009" which prohibits those engaged in business from monopolizing and abusing their market power through price fixing and price discrimination, bid rigging, limitation and control of markets, agreement to limit and/or control markets, and tie-in arrangements, among others.

It was Enrile who openly assailed telecommunication giants Globe and Smart for continuing to defy the National Telecommunication Commission's new memorandum circular mandating telecommunications companies to start billing cellphone users on a "per pulse" basis.
