NOY, MAR TROUNCE RIVALS IN NP ALLY-COMMISSIONED SWS SURVEY

With barely a month before the May 10 elections, it is evident that voters have become more discerning in choosing the country's next leaders. This observation came as polling firm Social Weather Stations (SWS) released its latest survey commissioned by a close ally of Nacionalista Party (NP) presidential bet Manny Villar, Jr.

In the SWS survey commissioned by House Minority Floor Leader and San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, Villar failed to boost his ratings and garnered only 29% of voter support against the 37% of Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Senator Benigno S. Aquino III, giving the LP bet an eight point-lead or almost 5 million votes if all 50 million registered voters would participate in the May 10 elections.

The survey clearly showed that voters could not be swayed by massive and misleading political advertisements by Villar, who uses his billions to support his questionable pro-poor stance, according to analysts as they noted the intense black propaganda campaign employed by Villar's camp against Aquino, who remained as the most preferred presidential candidate among Filipinos.

In the same survey, former President Joseph Estrada remained on third place with 17%, followed by Gilberto Teodoro with 8%. The survey covered 2,100 respondents nationwide.

In the March 21-28 survey by SWS and BusinessWorld, meanwhile, Aquino cornered 37% against Villar's 28%, or equivalent to nine-percentage point lead. A separate survey by independent pollster Pulse Asia, Inc. showed that Aquino has maintained his lead with 37% over Villar's 25%.

Other presidential bets got 2% preference or less, such as Sen. Richard Gordon, evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Sen. Jamby Madrigal, environmentalist Nicanor Perlas, and Olongapo City councilor John Carlos delos Reyes.

A separate survey conducted from April 4-6 by Manila Standard Today (MST) led by resident pollster Pedro Laylo showed that 37% of the 2,500 respondents would vote for Aquino. Villar got 26%. Estrada got 18%, Teodoro, 8%, while Gordon and Villanueva both had 2%.

In the vice-presidential race, LP vice presidential bet Senator Mar Roxas is likely to run away with a landslide victory with 39% of voters preferring him over rival Senator Loren Legarda who got only 24%.

Meanwhile, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay is closing in on Legarda with 22%. Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando and TV host/actor Edu Manzano each got 3%, while Perfecto Yasay had 1%.
