ROXAS BARES MALACAÑANG'S PLOT TO SABOTAGE POLLS

Liberal Party (LP) President and vice-presidential race frontrunner Senator Mar Roxas has bared a plot by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's allies to sabotage the first-ever automated polls on May 10.

Roxas said that he received information that certain officials from Malacañang have been calling commissioners of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to postpone the scheduled national elections next week amid prohibitions in the law, particularly Republic Act No. 7166 or the Election Code.

The law provides that the poll body could postpone the elections in a certain locality, not nationwide.

Comelec officials, however, were warned by Roxas not to be dictated by pressure from Arroyo's allies since the Comelec is an "independent constitutional body" and the election is a very crucial part of democracy.

He said the Comelec should do its constitutional mandate of ensuring the electorate of a successful election and thwart moves to postpone the polls.

The conduct of a successful election is a game-changer for the country, Roxas said, especially with people wanting for genuine change and reform pushed by the tandem of LP bets Senator Benigno S. Aquino III and his running mate, Roxas.

Roxas added that Comelec officials who receive calls from higher-ups should record the calls made by Malacañang officials.
