ANGARA: GOV'T SHOULD SUPPORT LOCAL CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

Senator Edgardo J. Angara today urged the new administration to stimulate the creative industries of the Philippines, and give due attention to the culture and arts sector.

Deanna Ongpin-Recto, former at director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines noted that the government had very little part of the success of Filipino artists abroad. The former administration had neglected the arts and culture, with very little or no growth throughout the last term, she said.

Angara is quick to provide a course of action, "We already have the National Cultural Heritage law. What is needed now are practical and effective guidelines so we can execute this law properly and give priority to those institutions of arts and culture that need to be taken care of," said Angara, who authored the bill in 2009.

In a nutshell, the National Cultural Heritage Law exists to protect, conserve and promote national cultural heritage-whether it be a place, community, institution and history. Another function of this law is to provide professional growth and developments for cultural workers.

Angara was also behind the creation of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, or the former National Historical Institute.

Furthermore, Angara stressed the need for vision and planning in the culture and arts sector.

"The legislative framework for upholding our culture and the arts and protecting our cultural heritage are already here. Government must allocate adequate resources for the development of the creative industries," said Angara.
