UP ANNOUNCES ANGARA FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES

The University of the Philippines has presented its shortlist of candidates for the UP President Edgardo J. Angara Fellowship Program.

Among them are former NEDA Director General Sicat, former Dean of Economics Dr. Raul Fabella, Economics Professor Dr. Editha Tan, Law Professor and former Dean Dr. Raul Pangalangan, Physics professor and former Director of the National Institute of Physics Dr. Jose Magpantay, Political Science professor Dr. Clarita Carlos, School of Urban and Regional Planning professor Dr. Candido Cabrido, professor emeritus and aquaculture scientist Dr. Milagros Martinez-Goss, and, professor emeritus and former Manila UP chancellor Dr. Ernesto Domingo.

"This is a singular and unique grant in the UP system. Through this fellowship program we hope scholars will be able to participate more actively and meaningfully in policy decisions and in the development of the nation," said UP President Emerlinda Roman. The fellowship program was established by the Board of Regents in 2009 and it was endowed by friends and colleagues of Senator Angara, who was President of UP from 1981-87 and chaired the highly successful UP Centennial Celebration in 2009.

The fellowship program promotes high level research on a wide range of topics that address national development goals and imperatives, similar to the Fulbright and Humphrey Fellows programs of the United States.

Awarded on a competitive basis, the fellowship is open to regular full-time faculty members of UP. It provides a monetary award of at least P500, 000 each for research, local or foreign travel, and other expenses to undertake high level policy research or to participate in high level policy discussions in his/her area of expertise.

These include: science and technology, economic development, agricultural and rural development, natural resources, environment and climate change, public health policy and management, public policy and public administration, good governance, job creation, law and human rights, technology policy and management, communications and journalism.

Angara Fellows are required to present their research output, hold lectures, workshops and seminars, and engage other scholars, policymakers and the business community in discussions of national significance.
