ANGARA TO SPEAK AT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FORUM IN JAPAN

Senator Edgardo J. Angara will speak at this year's 7th Annual meeting of the Science and Technology in Society (STS) forum to be held in Kyoto, Japan from October 3 through 5.

The STS Forum, founded in 2004 by former Japanese Minister of Science and Technology Koji Omi, meets annually to discuss pressing S&T matters. Last year, over 800 participants including top scientists, political leaders and Nobel Laureates from around the world joined the forum.

Angara was invited to speak during the plenary session on the topic "Investing in Science and Technology for Building the Future- Dialogue among Political Leaders, Scientists and Industrialists."

As Chair of the Congressional Commission on Science, Technology and Engineering (COMSTE) and the Chair of the Senate Science and Technology Committee, Angara said will be discussing the emerging role of Public Private Partnerships (PPP's) in S&T innovation in the country.

Angara said that, "The S&T situation in the Philippines requires us to study the process and style of innovation in the country, asking questions like, Why is the Philippines ranked so low in scientific and engineering accomplishments, even after more the 25 years of steady investment by DOST and previous agencies in S&T in our schools and the government laboratories?"

The STS forum will tackle the many challenges of S&T, especially the unequal sharing of the benefits of S&T throughout different communities. The forum aims to bring this multi-national and multi-stakeholder approach to tackle the complex challenges facing S&T in the growing context of Globalization.
