P-Noy orders crackdown on jueteng lords
SEN. TG GUINGONA III LAUDS PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE

Senate Blue Ribbon Committee Chairperson Senator Teofisto 'TG' Guingona III lauds President Aquino's directive ordering the crackdown on suspected gambling lords and government officials who receive payoffs.

Aquino, who is currently in the United States for his first state visit, directed authorities to gather evidence against those named illegal numbers game operators and their coddlers to make sure they land in jail if found guilty.

"Now we have the order from the very top. These bribery allegations and coddling of gambling lords not only undermine the President's 'tuwid na daan' or good government but also destroys the very moral fiber of Philippine society," Guingona said.

In response to the president's order, the BIR announced that it will conduct lifestyle checks on suspected jueteng operators jueteng operators and their alleged protectors in government.

BIR Commissioner Kim Henares said their investigation would start with the personalities named from the lists of past and present officials allegedly on the take from jueteng operators presented by Retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz to the committee Senate and Sen. Miriam Santiago who presented her own list during a privilege speech.

The list presented by Cruz included Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Rico Puno and former Philippine National Police chief Jesus Verzosa who were named as 'ultimate recipients' of payoffs from jueteng operators, as well as well-known personalities who have been long associated with jueteng.

Sen. Guingona said the Committee is set to resume its investigation on the controversial jueteng payola issue on Thursday, September 30.
