STATEMENT OF SEN. FRANKLIN DRILON ON SC DECISION ON EO 1

We are saddened by the Supreme Court ruling declaring the creation of the Truth Commission unconstitutional. It is certainly a setback in the Aquino government's campaign against graft and corruption.

But this legal setback should not deter President Benigno S. Aquino III from exhausting all legal means to make public officials answerable to allegations of graft and corruption in the Arroyo administration.

Clearly, this decision is one of the many legal obstacles laid down by the Arroyo administration to prevent the former administration from being made to answer to the Filipino people for its abuses and excesses. Its putting in place nearly 1,000 midnight appointees to key government positions is another example of that attempt to suppress public accountability.

I am confident, however, that these legal obstacles will not succeed in impeding the Aquino administration from fulfilling its commitment to provide closure to these corruption charges and bring the perpetrators to the bar of justice.
