MORE SCHOLARSHIPS IN KOREA AVAILABLE TO FILIPINO STUDENTS

Seoul, Korea--Senator Edgardo J. Angara is encouraging high school and college graduates interested in science and technology-related courses to apply for scholarships to Korea's top universities and join hundreds of Filipino scholars there.

Angara, author of the Free High School Act which guarantees access to secondary education for all Filipino students, just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with President Yoo Jae-cheon of Sangji University for scholarships for Filipino students.

He also met with President Kim Hyung-tae of Hannam University to promote collaboration between our two countries through the exchange of students and faculty, joint research and other academic activities. Hannam University is located in Daejeon, Korea's Sillicon Valley or science and technology capital.

"These two universities have excellent S&T and engineering programs. I hope to link them up with technology-oriented schools in the Philippines to help develop the critical mass of scientists, engineers and technologists that our country needs for faster R&D-driven growth," said Angara, chair of the Senate Committee on Education, Culture and Arts.

He continued, "Through academic exchanges and scholarships, both countries gain better understanding of each other's unique culture and tradition. Moreover, Filipinos would gain entry into the international academic community and possibly get more opportunities for work and advanced studies."

More than 400 Filipino students are currently studying in South Korea on scholarship. Most of them are majoring in Science and Technology, Wireless and Information Technology, International Relations, Business Administration, and Policy Development.
