Legarda Looks Forward to Sharing Phil Culture with Queen of Spain

Senator Loren Legarda today said that she is looking forward to sharing uniquely Philippine culture with Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain, who will visit the Philippines from July 2 to July 6, 2012.

Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committees on Foreign Relations and Cultural Communities, said that Queen Sofia and the Spanish Government, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), have been responsible for many ventures in education and development in the country.

"During Her Majesty's visit, I would want to share with her the beauty of our country's culture, some of which had been influenced by Spain, but many others, especially those of our indigenous peoples are unique to us. We will enjoin the Queen of Spain to discover the richness of our heritage," she said.

The Senator said that she will give Queen Sofia a private tour of the newly-inaugurated permanent textiles galleries in the National Museum.

"I look forward to showing Her Majesty our vibrant traditional textiles, which are revelations of Filipino's indigenous life, reflections of our cultural rootedness and symbols of our identity. The establishment of the textile galleries is an effort to open doors of opportunities for weaving communities and promote greater support for cultural enterprises and creative industries of our indigenous peoples," Legarda said.

The Hibla ng Lahing Filipino textile galleries, which were established through Legarda's initiative, are housed in the adjoining Queen Sofia Hall (named after Her Majesty) and Hall 318 in the Old Legislative Building of the National Museum.

"Queen Sofia and the Spanish Government have been our staunch allies in various cultural, social, and humanitarian projects, and this visit underscores the friendship cherished by our two countries. We should welcome Her Majesty with pride and our trademark hospitality," Legarda concluded.
