Senate adopts resolution expressing
sympathy on the death of Rep. Escudero

The Senate today adopted a resolution expressing condolence to the family of Senator Chiz Escudero whose father, Sorsogon Rep. Salvador Escudero III, passed away early this morning.

Senate Resolution 834 was unanimously approved.

"The Senate expresses its profound sympathy and sincere condolence on the death of Representative Salvador Escudero III. He was a dedicated and committed lawmaker, who religiously attended and participated in the plenary sessions and committee hearings of the House of Representatives. He continued to serve the interest of the people in spite of his frail condition during the past years," the resolution said.

"Rep. Escudero sponsored amendments to the Local Government Code to further empower local government units, pushed for the automatic promotion to one rank higher of government officials and employees upon retirement from government service and advocated for the restoration in our statutes of the criminal liability of a person under 18 years of age," the resolution added.

His death is not only a great loss to his family and constituents but to the nation as well, the resolution said.

Escudero was battling colon cancer for more than two years. He was 69 years old. He was a former agriculture secretary and minister of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture during the time of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. He was also the former director of the Bureau of Animal Industry in 1975 to 1984, dean of University of the Philippines (UP)-Los Baños College of Veterinary Medicine, and former director of UP Veterinary Hospital. Escudero finished his Veterinary Medicine at UP-Los Baños in 1963 and took up Tropical Veterinary Medicine at the University of Queensland, Australia, in 1968. (Pilar Macrohon, PRIB)
