KIKO: BANGSAMORO BASIC LAW WILL BE IN GOOD HANDS
IN 16TH CONGRESS

Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan allays doubts that the Bangsamoro Basic Law that will be drafted by a Transitional Committee as provided for by the framework agreement between the government peace panel and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) will not meet the demands of the people of Mindanao.

"We should put faith in the Aquino administration. They have brought us this far in the peace process, and I refuse to believe that it will allow itself to falter with its next steps. This is a major step, but building a national consensus for genuine peace is critical if the framework is to be realized and a peace accord signed and sealed."

Pangilinan adds that all Filipinos are stakeholders in the peace process and, as such, everyone must give their full support to the efforts of both the government panel and the MILF.

"This framework agreement would not have been possible without our brothers in the MILF saying they want to give peace a chance. We laud the MILF for recognizing peace as a means to achieve their vision for Mindanao. This agreement did not come about easily. It was achieved through concerted effort of Filipinos in finding ways to end the decades-long war and uprising in Mindanao."

"True prosperity will not be possible without peace. Poverty cannot be addressed while bullets continue to fly above the heads of those working to bring progress and development in the region. Lasting peace is a necessary, basic step towards progress and development. Once economic prosperity starts manifesting itself, the people themselves will work hard so that peace may continue to reign."
