PIMENTEL HAILS DONAIRE WIN

Senator Aquilino "Koko" L. Pimentel III, PDP Laban President, today commended Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. for winning and successfully defending the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Super Bantamweight Championship Belt against Toshiaki Nishioka last October 13, 2012 in Carson, California.

In Senate Resolution No. 887, Pimentel, chairman of the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement, said "Donaire's well-deserved victory is an outstanding display of the Filipino spirit of competitiveness and excellence".

The senator from Mindanao said Donaire's triumph "confirms the image of Filipinos as world-class boxers who continue to bring honor and distinction to our country."

Pimentel pointed out that the boxer, born in Bohol and raised in General Santos City but is now based in the United States, "displayed masterful skill and tremendous power when he floored Nishioka twice en route to scoring a ninth round stoppage by international referee Raul Caiz Sr."

Pimentel noted that Donaire Jr., "is also known as a switch-hitter with the ability to fight either southpaw or orthodox".
