Cayetano pushes for more government support for fisherfolk

Senate minority leader Alan Cayetano today vowed to push for more legislative measures aimed at protecting the livelihood of the fisherfolk.

He said this in response to his discussion with the members of the 1-Lambat Partylist - a part of his listening tour aimed at learning the true concerns and needs of the country's different sectors.

Cayetano lamented that despite the long history of fishing as an industry in the country, the support it gets from the government is still minimal at best.

"Only one division of the Department of Agriculture (DA) overseeing the welfare of the fishing industry - the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)," he said.

The senator considers the issue close to his heart as he remembered how his father, the late Senator Rene Cayetano, used to love eating "ayungin" - a fish that is now close to extinction.

"I myself love eating dalag. But I fear that if we don't take care our fisherfolk and this industry, we will lose these treasures of our country to extinction," he said.

Cayetano is on a listening tour on PiTiK: Presyo, Trabaho. Kita to get an update on how the benefits of today's economy have trickled down to the people, particularly how present inflation, employment opportunities and wage levels have affected them.

He held a series of consultation with market vendors (Pritil Market and Murphy Public Market), the flower vendors (Dangwa Market), the Taguig City Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) and the fisherfolk of 1-Lambat Partylist today as part of the tour.

Cayetano is running for re-election as senator under the Nacionalista Party with the Team PNoy coalition.
