Legarda Celebrates the Glory of Thy Womb

Even as she has already hailed the film several times, Senator Loren Legarda continues to celebrate the glory of Director Brillante Mendoza's "Thy Womb" through a special screening of the film.

Legarda has arranged a special screening of Thy Womb on March 15 at the Podium, inviting mostly student leaders and those in the academe to witness the movie, which she describes as a creative and fearless contribution to Filipino filmmaking.

"Thy Womb explores the intricacies of rural life largely through the eyes of a Badjao midwife, revealing new facets of the plight of Filipino indigenous peoples and especially the unique struggles of women," she said.

Thy Womb has been acclaimed by both local and international award-giving bodies. It received seven awards at the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) including Best Director for Mendoza and Best Actress for Nora Aunor.

Mendoza was also awarded the La Navicella Venezia Cinema Award of the Rivista del Cinematografo and the P. Nazareno Taddei Award Special Mention at the 69th Venice International Film Festival; and the Best Director Award at the 2012 Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) in Brisbane, Australia.

The Senate, through a Resolution filed by Legarda, honored Mendoza for his international achievements.

"Direk Brillante has consistently shown his caliber as a filmmaker through an impressive filmography and numerous local and international awards. His films continue to contribute to the enrichment of Filipino arts and culture," said Legarda.
