Statement of Senator Nancy Binay on the 28th anniversary celebration
of the 1986 EDSA Revolution

Twenty-eight years ago, Filipinos gathered on EDSA to show the world that we could rise as one nation to peacefully end a repressive regime.

This moment served as an inspiration and model to many people aspiring for democracy and hungry for change around the world - from the revolutions in Eastern and Central Europe in 1989, the peaceful uprisings in Egypt in 2011 as well as Thailand, Ukraine and Venezuela today.

EDSA led the way so that we can regain and freely enjoy the many freedoms - the freedom of speech, of peaceful assembly, among others - that the dictatorship took away from us for 14 years.

But EDSA is not yet finished - it is still a work in progress as many of our countrymen remain mired in hunger, poverty and inequality.

Twenty-eight years ago, we gathered in EDSA to demand for our rights. Today, we are still marching hand in hand - so that every Filipino, regardless of economic status, age and sex can gain and enjoy true democracy, justice and equality.
