POE: HIKE PAY OF GOV'T DOCTORS AND NURSES

Sen. Grace Poe wants to increase the pay of government doctors and nurses to recognize their selfless service and vital contribution to the nation's health and citizens' empowerment.

Poe filed twin bills seeking to hike the minimum compensation of government doctors from salary grade 16 to 24, and that of government nurses from salary grade 11 to 15.

"Increasing the salaries of doctors is one important step that may help mitigate the migration of doctors and ensure quality health care for our people," Poe said in filing Senate Bill (SB) No. 2689.

At the same time, in SB 2688, Poe recognized the crucial role of nurses, citing "their qualifications, high level of competency, and the amount of sacrifice that Filipino nurses provide."

Section 3 of SB 2689 provides, "The present minimum salary grade of government doctors (Medical Officer I) shall be upgraded from Salary Grade 16 to Salary Grade 24 (equivalent to P49,740 for step 1). Salary grade levels of those occupying higher positions shall be adjusted accordingly."

Meanwhile, SB 2688 states that the salary grade of government nurses (Nurse I) "shall be upgraded from Salary Grade 11 to Salary Grade 15 (equivalent to P24,887 for step 1).

Poe's bills assign the Department of Health and the Department of Budget and Management to promulgate the necessary rules and regulations to implement the measure.

Her bills are consistent with her main advocacy--to safeguard the welfare of the most vulnerable sectors, particularly children.
