Koko seeks upgrade of Isabela general hospital

Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III has filed Senate Resolution No. 2915 seeking to upgrade the Southern Isabela General Hospital in Santiago City, Isabela into a tertiary general hospital to be known as the Southern Isabela Medical Center.

Pimentel said the proposed premier tertiary hospital would not only serve ailing constituents of Isabela province but also patients coming from nearby provinces of Nueva Ecija, Quirino, Nothern Ifugao and Aurora.

He said it is the priority concern of the government to give the people easy access to affordable health care, especially in the countryside, where specialized medical services are oftentimes beyond the reach of ordinary and poor residents.

Pimentel said the Constitution provides that "the state shall protect and promote the right to health of the people and instil health consciousness among them."

"One of the means to implement this constitutional mandate is to ensure that there are adequate health facilities such as hospitals, health centers, rural clinics and the like in cities and provinces," Pimentel said.

He said the upgraded medical center would now be able to provide specialized treatment to patients without need of seeking the same from private hospitals whose services and facilities are just too expensive for ordinary citizens.
