PANGILINAN HEADS SENATE AGRI COMMITTEE

MANILA - The Senate on Tuesday elected Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan to head its Committee on Agriculture and Food.

Pangilinan, former Presidential Assistant on Food Security and Agricultural Modernization, said this would allow him to pursue his advocacy to raise the income of Filipino farmers.

"Alam nating ang mga magsasaka at mangingisda ang mga pinaka mahirap sa ating bayan. Hindi ito tama dahil sila ang nagpapakain sa atin (We know that farmers and fishers are the poorest in our country. This is not right when they feed us)," he said.

"Uumpisahan agad natin ang proseso para maging batas ang ating panukalang Sagip Saka (We will start right away with the process to make Sagip Saka a law)," he added.

Sagip Saka intends to raise farmers' income by connecting them directly to big-time food buyers including the government and fast food giants.

The Senate also elected Senator Cynthia Villar as vice chairperson and Senators Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Zubiri, Richard Gordon, Bam Aquino, Loren Legarda, Leila De Lima, Grace Poe, Chiz Escudero, and Antonio Trillanes as members.

Pangilinan was also elected vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights and member of the committees on ways and means, national defense and security, education, and finance, among others.
