JV Ejercito Directs PNP to LGU Involvement on War vs Drugs

Senator JV Ejercito highlighted the big role that the local government unit could play on the government's all-out war against drugs during the Public Order Committee hearing on Thursday.

"The LGUs are the first line of agency in the government and I believe that they could play a very big role in the campaign against drugs. They could actually assist the Philippine National Police in the continuous rehabilitation of surrenderees like providing for cash-for-work program," Ejercito said.

He added, "The war on drugs, as I said before, really gives a chilling effect because it is first in our history that thousands are surrendering to the authorities. The challenge now is what are we going to do with them? I think that we should get the commitment of the LGUs to this end."

Aside from seeking LGU commitment, Ejercito pointed out the coordination with countries whose nationals are caught in the Philippines. He also suggested that the lack of capital punishment could be one of the reasons why the country is considered as hub of international drug syndicates.

The Senator, who pushed for the added air assets of PNP in the 2016 Budget, vowed to support the agency in the passage of the 2017 Budget to capacitate it through procurement of modern surveillance equipment in relation to the government's all-out war on drugs.
