Cayetano: give additional budget, attention to social services for vulnerable sectors

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, in manifesting his support to the leadership of Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, asked Congress to allocate more funds for the agency's programs.

The senator on Wednesday (May 3) commended the DSWD leadership for its initiatives to reform the system with the goal of making people's lives better, especially those who need help the most.

He said the executive and the legislative branches of government should collaborate to fully support DSWD's programs so more people can benefit from the genuine changes promised by the new administration.

The senator particularly urged his colleagues in Congress to increase DSWD's 2018 budget to fund programs for the benefit of the elderly, abandoned and neglected children, disaster victims, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

" Ang ganda ng programa natin sa pangkalahatan. But there are some sectors that are really vulnerable... (For instance,) 'yung mga nasunugan na naubos talaga lahat ng ari-arian... automatic after assessment, (they can) join the government's Conditional Cash Transfer program," he said.

"I am confident that the DSWD, under Secretary Taguiwalo, can be expected to deliver the changes and effective benefits promised by President Duterte," Cayetano added.

Cayetano continues to lead moves in the Senate for the expansion of the government's Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, to cover more beneficiaries including PWDs, as well as to include a livelihood component that grants indigent Filipinos better access to capital to sustain their own businesses.
