Sen. Bam bares fake emails attempting to connect minority senators to destabilization

Senator Bam Aquino bared fake e-mails sent from hacked e-mail accounts of Senate minority staff.

"Fake news has escalated to fake e-mails and digitally planted evidence," said Sen. Bam.

In a press conference, Sen. Bam revealed fake e-mails found in draft and spam folders of employees in an attempt by hackers to connect the opposition to destabilization plots against the government.

"We decided to share this with the public because a lot of pro-administration personalities and online supporters alike are spreading fake news of a destabilization plot by the Liberal Party," said Sen. Bam.

"Wala po kaming destabilization plot. Ang mga nasa likod nitong hacking at pekeng e-mails ang mga tunay na destabilizers. Parang gusto nilang magkagulo ang Pilipinas," the senator added.

According to Sen. Bam, the accounts of some staff members were used to send dubious e-mails containing controversial subject lines, like "Leaked Media Plan to Destroy PRRD" and "The Investigation on DDS", together with an attached file.

"It is also possible that these files, which prompt an error when opened, are being used to gain control of the device or phish for information," Sen. Bam said.

The minority senators have reported the issue to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to determine the persons behind the hacking and the spread of destabilization rumors. A total of 5 e-mail accounts have already been hacked, 2 from the office of Sen. Bam Aquino and 3 from the office of Sen. Kiko Pangilinan.

"Kailangan natin alamin kung sino ang nasa likod nito at panagutin sila. Nararapat lang na makulong ang mga taong ito dahil krimen ang kanilang ginawa," stressed Sen. Bam.
