Sen. Joel Villanueva's Labor Day message

Today, we celebrate the Filipino workers, their hard work and their service to the country.

As we mark the 116th Labor Day in the country, let our celebration be a reminder that each Filipino worker is not measured just in terms of productivity or cost in production, but how steadfast and how far we have progressed in ensuring the dignity of labor in this period of globalization and workplace transformations.

The task is great and the struggle is uphill in ensuring fair labor practices here and for our Filipino workers toiling overseas. But we will continue to ford forward no matter the challenges for our Filipino workers.

In the Senate, we have been pushing for laws that will curb the abuses in workplaces particularly concerning observance of occupational health and safety (OSH) standards and the right to security of tenure.

With respect to the right to security of tenure or ending "endo", the President's certification of our bill as a priority measure will definitely help in the passage of a law that clarifies what is labor-only contracting and what is job contracting, and simplifies the classification of employees to regular and probationary.
