Sen. Ejercito: Feed school children full meal all-year round

SENATOR JV Ejercito has proposed a full meal, all-year round feeding program for school children in public schools to address the problem of children malnutrition in the country.

Ejercito's proposal came as he noted that the Social Weather Station survey conducted in October last year showed that 3.1 million Filipino families, or equivalent to 13.3 percent of the Philippine population, had suffered hunger.

Ejercito said that under Republic Act 11037, or the "Masustansiyang Pagkain Para sa Batang Pilipino Act," school feeding for children is for 120 days only.

"Bakit hindi natin gawin 200 days instead of 120 days lang? There are 200 class days in one school-year kaya mas mainam na pakainin ang mga bata ng full nutritious meal tuwing may pasok hanggang matapos ang school-year," he said in a statement.

Ejercito even said that under the Constitution, it is the right of every Filipino citizen, especially children, to have sufficient and nutritious food to ensure their health.

"Kung gutom at kulang sa sustansiya ang kinakain, hindi kumpleto ang kakayahan ng mga bata na matutunan ang itinuturo sa kanila sa paaralan. Kaya malaking tulong kung mayroon silang full meal ng masusustansiyang pagkain sa eskuwelahan sa buong taon ng klase," Ejercito said.
