Villar condemns Jolo Cathedral bombing

Sen. Cynthia Villar today condemned the bombing of Jolo Cathedral which killed 20 people and wounded at least 80 others.

"This bombing which targeted innocent people as they celebrate the Sunday mass is clearly an act of terrorism. This should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. No time should be wasted in hunting down those who are responsible for this senseless act," Villar said.

Villar also condoles with the loved ones of those who perished and sympathizes with those who were wounded. Authorities also said that aside from civilians, soldiers were also among those who died in the blast.

"I fully support our government as they vow to crush those responsible for the attack. I am also praying for the safety of military personnel as they go after the perpetrators," Villar said.

Villar also expressed concern that the bombing could be an attempt to undermine the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law and the creation of the new Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao as a measure that will bring prosperity and lasting peace in Mindanao.

On Sunday, two improvised explosive devices exploded at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo, Sulu. Initial report says the IED was placed inside a motorcycle's utility box.
