Go aids victims of Tropical Storm Ineng in Ilocos Norte

Laoag City - Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go headed to Brgy. Metro Gabu, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte on Monday afternoon after the National Heroes Day celebration in Taguig City in the morning to visit and provide relief assistance to individuals and families affected by Tropical Storm Ineng.

The Senator reaffirmed his commitment to always be there for Filipinos in need wherever they are and whenever he can to extend help and hear their concerns firsthand.

"This is a public office and what I am doing is public service. I will not limit myself to being a legislator only.

During the visit, Go joined in the Bangon Ilocos: Relief Operations and Seed Distribution at the Capitol Auditorium in the city.

Accompanying Go were officials from the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other government agencies, also providing assistance to the victims, alongside the aid given by the office of the Senator and supporters who share the same advocacy of helping victims of calamities.

Fellow Senator Imee Marcos and Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Manotoc also accompanied the national government officials to provide help to those affected.

(Go pushes for creation of DDR) Given the frequency of calamities and natural disasters that often occur in the country, Go said that he is pushing for the establishment of a separate executive department focused on disaster resilience to serve as the lead agency for disaster response of the government.

Last month, Go filed Senate Bill 205, known as "Disaster Resilience Act of 2019", which seeks to establish "an empowered, highly-specialized, and responsive Department of Disaster Resilience with clear unity of command."

The department aims to provide faster government response to natural disasters and calamities, such as typhoons and earthquakes, by merging all related agencies under a single department. The proposed measure also mandates local government units to build permanent evacuation centers that are comfortable and complete with all necessary supplies needed by evacuees.

(Malasakit Center soon to open in Ilocos Norte) Meanwhile, asked as to when Ilocos Norte will get its own Malasakit Center, Go said that the office will be established in a provincial hospital soon.

Go said adding that government plans to establish one in Ilocos Norte within the next six months.

(PRRD in good shape - Go) Go also answered questions regarding President Rodrigo Duterte's absence during the Heroes' Day celebrations early Monday morning.

"Medyo he is indisposed, medyo masama ang pakiramdam ngayong araw na ito. You know, 74 years old na po ang ating mahal na Pangulo.

Go, meanwhile, allayed fears about the President's health, saying he is in good shape.

"Okay naman po siya. Nothing to worry. He is in tip top condition ready to be with the public again tomorrow," Go said.

(Go: Sanchez' case an eye opener) During the interview, Go was also asked about the President's reaction on ex-Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez. According to Go, the criminal's possible earlier release does not sit well with the President himself.

Hindi eligible ang heinous crimes para sa good conduct time allowance (GCTA)," Go said.

Go added that Sanchez's case is an eye-opener not only to lawmakers and law enforcers, but to all Filipinos.

"Eye-opener po ito sa lahat para makita nila na talagang dapat bantayan, not only Antonio Sanchez, kundi lahat po ng mga gumawa ng heinous crimes," he said.

"Panahon nang tignan natin ng mabuti. Sa mga opisyales natin sa BuCor, Board of Parole, etc, bantayan niyong mabuti yang mga naging involved sa dangerous drugs and other heinous crimes," Go added.

The Senator reiterated his call to start considering again the possible reinstatement of death penalty in the country, particularly for those convicted of heinous crimes.

Go explained that there should be a balance between giving incentives for prisoners to reform themselves by showing good behavior while in jail, and seeking justice for the victims as well as ensuring that criminals will not be a threat to society anymore.
