Revilla to DPWH, LGU's: Conduct immediate audit, review of existing buildings, structures

"Dapat ngayon na isagawa ang inspeksiyon at audit ng mga buildings at structures, hindi 'yung kada lilindol pag-uusapan, pag-hupa tigil din ang usapan, pag-lindol usap na naman."

This were the words of Sen. Bong Revilla on Monday after filing a resolution urging the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and all local government units to conduct an immediate audit and review of existing buildings and structures to ensure compliance with the standards set by the National Building Code on Structural Safety.

The veteran lawmaker believes that an audit is necessary to protect people against avoidable damage to property and loss of lives.

It was reported that the first quake occurred on October 16, 2019 with a Magnitude of 6.3 with epicenter in Tulunan, North Cotabato.

The second strong earthquake recorded on October 29 was Magnitude 6.6, with and almost the same epicenter located 25 kilometers southeast of the Municipality of Tulunan.

On October 31, another strong earthquake was recorded with Magnitude of 6.3 with the same epicentre location in Tulunan. North Cotabato;

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that these earthquakes are part of a sequence of events from interrelated faults in the region, while the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that as of November 4, 2019, 6:00 AM, there are a total of 22 dead, 424 injured, and 2 missing persons were reported in Regions X, XI, XII, and BARMM because of the series of earthquakes;

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that affected and damaged infrastructures reached a total of 29,453.

Bong Revilla reminded that the Department of Public Works and Highways and all local government units are mandated to strictly implement the National Building Code, the government's policy which sets the technical standards in constructing and renovating buildings and structures in the Philippines.

"Ito na dapat ang huling wake-up call sa atin; Wala na dapat shortcuts para masiguro ang kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan," Revilla said.
