Senate honors police officer for shielding studes, mentors from exploding grenade

The Senate today adopted a resolution lauding and commending a police officer in Misamis Oriental for sacrificing his life to save the lives of students and teachers at the Initao College in Misamis Oriental last Nov. 28.

President Rodrigo Duterte posthumously conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu Magalong and the PNP Medal of Valor or Medalya ng Kagitingan to Police Senior Master Sergeant Jason Janog Magno last Dec. 5 for his selfless act when he covered a lobbed grenade with his body and saved the lives of those around him.

Adopted was Senate Resolution No. 229, taking into consideration Senate Resolutions 231, 237 and 253 introduced by Senators Panfilo Lacson, a former head of the Philippine National Police, Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, Ramon Bong Revilla and Sonny Angara respectively.

Magno, a police explosive ordnance disposal specialist, and Police Master Sergeant Alice Balido responded to a distress call from the Initao College about a man brandishing a grenade inside the educational institution.

Magno and Balido tried to subdue a certain Ibrahim Ampaso Basher, who was brandishing a knife and a grenade at the students and teachers, but the suspect pulled out the pin and threw the grenade at the police officers.

According to the resolution, Magno covered the grenade with his body and saved the lives of those around him. Not less than 10 people were injured in the incident but no other lives were lost.

"The selfless act of Police Master Sergeant Jason Magno should be emulated and recognized not only by the Philippine National Police but by the entire country," Lacson said.

"The Senate honors and commend the late Police Senior Master Sergeant Jason Janog Magno for his extraordinary bravery, heroism and instinct to protect and save the lives of his fellow men at the cost of his own going beyond his sworn duty to serve and to protect," he added.
