Senate commends PH kickboxing team's sterling performance in SEA Games

Few hours before Wednesday's closing ceremonies of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, the national kickboxing team's sterling performance in the regional sports meet received due recognition from senators.

Senate Resolution No. 265, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri, commended the Philippine National Kickboxing Team for winning a total of six medals - three golds, two silvers and one bronze.

"The members of the Philippine Kickboxing Team had sacrificed a lot, giving their hearts and souls in the exhaustive trainings in several foreign territories and their sacrifices and hard works did not go to waste," Zubiri said.

The honor and glory brought by the national team for kickboxing deserves the commendation not only of the Senate but the Filipino nation as well, he added.

Zubiri and Sen. Christopher "Bong" Go, who co-sponsored the resolution, also gave commendation to their colleague, Sen. Francis "Tol" Tolentino, who they said once drew the master plan and made the initial preparation of the team for the 30th SEA Games.

"Your leadership and dedication has been instrumental in the victory of our team," Go said in his speech referring to Tolentino.

"Bagamat hindi lang ang ating bansa ang kinikilala ng mundo bilang tahanan ng kickboxing, kahanga-hanga naman po ang naging performance ng Philippine team. Patunay ito na kapag may sapat na suporta sa pamahalaan at taumbayan, kayang magtagumpay ng atletang Pilipino," Go added.

Zubiri said Tolentino, who is the president of the Samahang Kickboxing ng Pilipinas (SKP), helped in training the athletes.

"Truly, kickboxing deserves these accolades for its sterling performance in the 30th SEA Games," he said.

Go, in his speech, announced that President Duterte will confer the Order of Lapu-Lapu to all Filipino SEA Games medalists and reward them with some cash incentives.
