Statement of Senator Win Gatchalian on the celebration of Labor Day

As we celebrate May 1 Labor Day, we pay tribute to all the Filipino workers and their contribution to the country -- from the farmers who till our rich agricultural lands and the fishermen who brave the uncharted seas to bring food on our tables, to those who work in graveyard shifts and those who have to work overseas away from their families. Big or small, these workers have been instrumental in laying and fortifying the foundation of our economy for decades. They truly are the backbone of a bright future for the country.

However, these are tough times for each and every Filipino worker as the COVID-19 pandemic affects our very own livelihood. Many lost their jobs and some were left with no assurance if they can get their jobs back. Likewise, we share the grief of the families of our fallen doctors and medical personnel who earnestly did their job until the end.

Sa panahong ito, tinatawagan natin ang pagtutulungan ng gobyerno at ng bawat employer na siguruhin ang kapakanan ng bawat manggagawa sa ating bansa, lalo na yung mga direktang naapektuhan, sa pamamagitan ng mabilis na pagbibigay ng ayuda at paglalaan ng iba pang insentibo upang makabangon silang muli.

The Philippines will not have a strong and growing economy without a strong, growing working class. With the economic and health crisis we are facing today, let's ensure that no one will be left behind. We will heal, recover, and succeed as one.
